How mobile phones changed the world

Our contemporary fascination with mobile phones knows no end. Mobile technology has proved to be the fastest global diffusion of any technology in human history. What is the reason for its success?

The answer is simple. Mobile technology is most adapted to the essence of the human species . . . sociability.

There are lots of them:
There are 3.3 billion active mobiles in circulation, or one mobile phone for every two human beings on the planet. Over 47m British adults have a mobile phone, about 70% of the population. In America, only 40% have one.

16-year-old Lindsay Fletcher from Wigan is the UK's fastest texter: she created a 233-character message in 100 seconds. Woz itn txt spk? The record does not tell.

Drivers reactions are a third slower when talking on a handheld mobile than when under the influence of alcohol. Which is not to say that drink driving is any better, both are against the law.

Mobile phones make a mess: We human beings are a mucky lot and throw away mobiles with alarming ease. Discarded mobile phones can leach toxic waste into water tables, contaminating agricultural land or worse.

  • Mobile phones can contain dangerous chemicals such as cadmium which can be highly carcinogenic;

  • They also can contain lead, nickel, mercury or lithium to name but a few dangerous metals;

  • Lead can also cause both liver and neurological problems;

  • Many of these elements cannot decompose;

  • Lithium, if it comes into contact with water, can cause fires in landfills;

  • Other health problems such as genetic or reproductive defects, nervous system problems can also be caused by these dangerous chemicals.
  • More than 125 million phones are discarded every year.

    Voting in Estonia: Talk of the 2008 US election is abuzz with stories about how the internet has changed political campaigning. Yet, quiet, small, Estonia is leading the global technopolitical charge. Even Lithuania is booking a seat on the e-voting (online voting) train. In Estonia mobile phones act as both a convenient vote delivery platform, but also a personal identity confirmation, ushering in a new era of m-voting.

    Koreans Love to Text Message: Korean teenagers between 15 and 19 years of age send over 20,000 text messages a year. That is about 60 texts per day. Whatever was wrong with talking to each other?

    16% of British kids have been bullied by text message. It seems technology makes targeting people with mailicious messages easier. What a sad misuse of enabling technology.

    2% of mobile owners had their phones stolen last year, or a theft every three minutes. The Metropolitan Police claim that these thefts account for 1/3 of all street robberies in London.

    Targets for terrorist attacks increasingly tend to be major urban centres. The logic is that since most people have mobile phones, this system could help collectively find out where the problem lies. It is now possible to locate a person using a mobile phone down to a range of a few metres, anywhere on the globe.

    Used for National Disaster Response: Mobiles are more useful during an emergency than just for calling loved ones. Other countries have adopted systems whereby phone companies automatically warn citizens of emergencies/disasters - free of charge. Finland, in 2005, adopted such a system, as did Japan.

    Top Fiction Written on Mobile Phones: Turning the Japanese publishing industry on its head, this trend is thriving and making significant money for aspiring writers.
