Acorn
UK computer manufacturer. In the early 1980s, Acorn produced a series of home microcomputers, including the Electron and the Atom. Its most successful computer, the BBC Microcomputer, was produced in conjunction with the BBC. Subsequent computers (the Master and the Archimedes) were less successful. Acorn was rescued by the Italian company Olivetti in 1985 and subsequently sold off its majority shareholding.
In 1999, Acorn was bought by US investment bank Morgan Stanley and broken up. Acorn's successful spin-off ARM continued to thrive, however.
