wavetable synthesizer
MIDI synthesizer that uses sampling – recordings of actual musical instruments – to create sounds. The authenticity of the sound source means that wavetable synthesizers can achieve highly realistic results.
Older sound cards stored the samples in ROM, but newer cards use the host computer's system RAM. This makes it possible to load new sounds to replace the factory settings.
