Eckert, Wallace John
US computer engineer. He established a computation laboratory at Columbia University and developed techniques for linking tabulating and adding equipment. As director of the Watson Laboratory at Columbia, he helped develop the Selective Sequence Electronic Calculator in 1948.

He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. An astronomer by training, he was intrigued by the possible application of computers to astronomical calculations. He encouraged International Business Machines (IBM) to support computer research as early as 1933.
