Licklider, Joseph (Carl Robnett)
US computer scientist. He was among the first in the 1960s to recognize the potential for user-friendly computers. He published a series of papers in which he outlined the ‘man-computer symbiosis’. He was affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1950–85) and made contributions in the application of computers to libraries and information storage and retrieval. Licklider was born in St Louis, Missouri.
