hostname
Alternative name given to a computer when it is connected to the Internet. The hostname is used instead of the unique Internet address which is in the form of four numbers separated by dots. The hostname is an alias, or nickname, and is easier to remember than the number.

One of the roles of the Domain Name Service is to maintain tables of Internet addresses and their corresponding hostnames.
