Build your own website with Tiscali
Your Tiscali internet account allows you to build your website and then upload it to Tiscali. At present, the webspace allowance you get differs according to your email address (
full details here), but this will soon be standardised at 50mb.
Getting Started
Before you start using your personal web space, you have to activate your account. To do this,

Note LineOne users do not need to activate their webspace.
Key Settings
Your website adddress will be
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/directoryname, where
directoryname is whatever you choose to call your website. It doesn't have to be your name - but think about this carefully, because you can't change your directory name.
Some existing users, for example those with LineOne email addresses have different web site addresses

Building your site
There are two ways to set about creating a web site.
-
Learn how to write in HyperText Markup Language (HTML). To do this you need a text editor such as Notepad (included with all versions of Windows. You can get it by clicking Start, then Programs, then Accessories.
- Use an HTML editor. These work very much like word processors or desktop publishing packages. They are very good for beginners, but you don't have quite as much control over how the page appears.
HTML is a vast subject and there are lots of resources on the internet to help you and lots of good books on the subject.

Uploading to your site
Once you’ve built your web site, you need to upload it to your web space. Some HTML editors will do this automatically for you. Alternatively you use an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client.
WS-FTP can be downloaded free
here.
Click here for an overview of uploading using WS FTP.
or
here, for Windows Commander, another FTP program.
When you upload to your web space, you will need an FTP login ID and password. These are the same as your usual Tiscali username and password.

The legal stuff
There are naturally a few rules covering how you may and may not use your web space. These appear in our main Terms and Conditions which are
here.
The basic rules are:
- You cannot put anything in your web space that is defamatory or offensive, if you do it will be removed.
- If you exceed your 50Mb of space, you will be asked to remove excess files.
- You must include a index file in your space such as index.htm or index.html
- You can only run CGIs provided by Tiscali.
- If your space does not include an index file or you do not use it within a three-month period, we may deactivate your account and remove any files.
There are also special rules if your sites uses too much bandwidth.
